Fat Tuesday is here and this is a day many people like to “overindulge.” At least what many “plan” to do, especially Catholics because tomorrow is the day we begin the lenten season (40 days & nights of giving up one or many indulgent behaviors, fasting, and focusing on being just better overall human beings) as we prepare for Easter…the day Jesus saved us from eternal damnation (kind of a big deal, sheesh).
But having gone to New Orleans with my lovely husband a few years back, I always like to have a more traditional Fat Tuesday NOLA style, with a nice pot of gumbo. This is what I’ll be making tonight and I’d love to hear how you plan to enjoy your Mardi Gras, and if you try any of these recipes, please let me know how it went!
Also, for the next six weeks, I’ll be sharing recipes that us Catholics focus on eating on Fridays, where we don’t eat meat (fish is okay) on Fridays and try to fast by only eating one meal a day (14 years+, not including children, immune compromised, elderly, and those unable to fast due to medical/personal reasons).
There are many wonderful things about fasting for your body. Some are mental improvements, wellness and health benefits, and even healing. I’ll share more about that come these next Fridays.
For now…let’s have some soul food time and enjoy a few indulgent recipes (which are also lovely to have anytime of the year)!
