ORANGE CLEANER

This cleaner was created when I was peeling oranges for my girls after their babysitter had sold us THE BEST Box of Cara Cara oranges for her cross country fundraiser. And let me tell you, to date, that was the sweetest and best tasting box of oranges our family ever had! So, as we embraced each delicious bite and the juices would drip down both our arms and faces, I couldn’t let the oranges glorious peels go to waste (even though we composted). I started thinking about all the things you could do with orange peels, from placing tea lights inside them or candying them for a sugary snack. I knew orange oil was a powerful degreaser, and I was cleaning using natural ingredients throughout my house so I put two and two together and created this concoction. I haven’t stopped and LOVE this cleaner, especially around the stove.

So every winter, this cleaner is made in many batches to last me all year! And, it smells divine! You’ll want to be mindful of the power of the citrus from the oranges and the vinegar, as it can strip the protective stone sealant and dissolve the calcite in the stone.

INGREDIENTS

  • 5-10 orange peels

  • 48 oz white vinegar

PREPARATION

  1. With the leftover orange peels, place in a glass jar.

  2. Add enough white vinegar to cover all of the orange peels.

  3. Cover with wax paper* and then secure with a rubber band or a lid.

  4. Place in a cool, dark spot and let sit for about six weeks or longer, depending on need.

  5. Strain liquid and remove orange peels.

  6. Then strain through a filter to remove any sediments. This can be done several times as any sediment can clog spray bottle.

  7. Once done, you can fill a spray bottle** half way, add the rest with distilled or filtered water.

  8. Store any leftover orange cleaner in a glass jar and place lid on top.

  9. Enjoy!

TIPS

*When putting vinegar in glass jars with lids, it can corrode the  metal lids, so placing wax paper over can help protect the lids.

**Recommend using glass spray bottle

***First test any area to make sure this cleaner won’t deteriorate the surface. Do not use on surfaces such as unsealed and sealed granite, marble, and the like.
